MV Agusta

MV Agusta History

The story of MV Agusta motorcycle began shortly after the Second World War with the manufacture of small 98cc single-cylinder two-stroke bikes to fulfill a social need for cheap transport. Count Domenico Agusta hoped to perfect the production models as a result of experience gained in the competitive field. With that, MV Agusta achieved magnificent improvements in motorcycling which always characterised MV's production.

During the first half-decade, about 15 models of motor were designed and brought to fruition. Under the strong guidance of the Count, MV's innovations were remarkable: the two-stroke engines for example were so in advance of their competitors that they came to overshadow even the best known four-stroke engines. The company so rose to dizzy heights in a short time, winning its first grand prix title in 1952 in the 125cc world championship. That success facilitated legendary racing careers. Most of all, it was the Italian eight-times 500cc world champion Giacomo Agostini, whose became synonymous with the MV Agusta brand.

MV Agusta hold the 500cc world championship title for an unbelievable unbeaten run from 1958 to 1974. But that's just a part of the full story: in fact, the company easily won several titles in all four of the categories (125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc) in which it participated.

With the death of Count Domenico Agusta in 1971, the brand Meccanica Verghera Agusta began to fade away. It was only four years later when competition from Japan proved too strong and the Agusta family concentrated all its efforts in the aeronautical side of the business. MV Agusta closed its doors within two years. More than 20 years later in 1997, the name appeared again - now under the Cagiva banner with the MV Agusta F4.
