July 16, 22, 1894: First genuine long-distance journey by car, a Benz Victoria, over 939 kilometers
In 1894, Theodor von Liebieg went on the first genuine long-distance journey in automotive history in his Benz Victoria. He drove 939 kilometers from his home town, Reichenberg in Bohemia, today's Czech Republic, to Gondorf near Koblenz, with a detour to visit Karl Benz in Mannheim.
The Benz Victoria proved to be highly reliable. It was the first four-wheeler with double-pivot steering, one of the most important inventions of Karl Benz, which has retained its significance to this day.
The single-cylinder engine with upright flywheel was installed in horizontal position; it developed three hp when it was first installed in the Victoria. This output was raised to six hp at a later stage.
