![]() Following the success of die first post-war series Bentley Mk VI, which was in production from 1946 to 1952, a revised updated four-door four-light salon, the R-Type, was launched in June 1952. The `R' prefix was derived from the fact that the MK VI series, had at that time reached the chassis letter R. The car was very similiar in all aspects to the previous model except .externally had a larger boot, wheel spats over the rear wheels were dispensed with and more shapely mudguards flowed out of the main body shell. A number of detail changes occurred including a new extended length, all-welded construction chassis, as opposed to the previous, riveted type. Automatic transmission, using the G.M. Hydra-matic design, was initiaily a faetory option and then became standard in late 1954. The compact R-Type soon became one of the most popular Bentleys built and in the three years of production 2.528 chassis were completed, of which 208 were Continentals.
The standard R-Type was not exactly slow, providing 106 mph in silence and O-50 mph in 10 seconds with an unladen weight of 1.850 kg. As with all Bentleys the various coachbuilders of the day provided their own specialist bodywork variations and the R-Type on offer is one of the very rare Abbott-bodied two-door fixed head coupes. T'he overall design has great similarities to the H.J. Mulliner Continentals and can easily be mistaken as such a car with its full flowing body and long fast back-boot. The vehicle offered here has the original papers and registration book. There have been 6 British owners.
The car has now been based in Germany for many years, always running and registered and the new owner can drive it immediately. The current owner likes high quality, the Bentley still has the original leather, and the wooden dashboard is as new. In 1994, after about 100,000 miles the engine was restored, after this the car has done very low mileage. This Bentley is a very rare example of a sport Bentley at an acceptable price.
