The white and blue propeller in the logo of BMW is based of the activities of the Bavarians in the aircraft building. Based on the Max Friz-designed M2B15 boxer engine, BMW built the R23 - with Boxer engine and shaft-drive - in 1923. This design-form has remained the standard up to present times.

One year later BMW engineers built the R39, a vertical shaft single-cylinder engine of 250cc. The R32 and R37 followed. These motorbikes were the first race-machines. In 1927 they produced the R47 and one year later the R57 with a 494cc engine.
